A group of managers on an assessment programme were asked the question:

"Think back to your first management job. On reflection what advice do you wish someone had given you then? And what is the one, single piece of advice you’d give to a new manager?

The answers are set out below. Sure they reflect the individual differences between them (managers aren’t clones) and their language may be a little raw but there was a surprising amount of agreement, as well as some excellent advice.
