Personal Development

Stoney FootpathIt has taken us a long time to accept that training is a passive term, ie something that is done to us; the active term is learning and developing and this is something that occurs after training, or more usually without it.

So how do we take responsibility for our own learning and development? Here are some tips and ideas to help you.

Our 10 tips for successful coaching

1. Manage expectations

Expectations should be discussed, clear and agreed upon at the beginning of any coaching relationship. Often when the coaching process doesn't work this can often be traced back to a lack of clarity around expectations.

2. Agree why we're doing this

Both of you need to jointly agree on the purpose, nature and outcomes of the relationship. When you each know what you want and why you want it, then you have the basis for building a successful relationship.

So, you have a difficult boss?

Even at the best of times work can be difficult but it’s especially painful when you’re having to manage upwards and deal with a difficult boss. It’s often said, people don’t resign from a job - they resign from a boss! These may help you to recognise and deal with a difficult boss, and it may just save your job.

A structured approach to meetings

To provide a useful and easy structure to meetings try the "PAT" approach. Then each meeting has to have: a Purpose, an Agenda, and a Timeframe or it is not a meeting and so you don't do it.

Everyone should be able to define the purpose of the meeting in 1 or 2 sentences at most. "This meeting is to plan the new XXXX campaign" or "this meeting is to review our new policy for purchasing." That way everyone knows why they are there, what needs to be done, and how to know if they are successful.

The first steps of management

So you’ve been promoted to a managerial role. The ‘baton’ may have been passed on for you to manage an existing team or organisation. Or you may be charged with building an entirely new staff or programme. Maybe you're already in charge, but have been given 'marching orders' to reorganise and restructure a department. Regardless of the specific situation, every manager faces a 'Day One';
