Ethical Audit for Smiths Industries

The Background:

Smiths Industries had created some new ‘ethical policies,’ and were rolling out various ethical initiatives globally designed to raise awareness and ensure the integrity of the organisation.

The Problem:

As with all initiatives it is easy to pay lip service and pat ourselves on the back for an initiative that may not actually be working in practice.

The Solution:

Once the policies had been embedded we were asked to conduct an ‘ethical audit’ of the global organisation to determine how far the message was getting through and, more importantly, being adhered to. So we measured cognition (understanding) of the issues and also behaviour, (what people were doing differently as a result). This allowed the organisation to have an objective, external perspective of how well their ethical initiatives were being embraced and a comparison between cognition and behaviour.
