Hess Habits
Hess is an independent energy company, punching way above its weight in the market, known for its difference and independent spirit. Previously they had been using oil industry standard competencies which did not relate to, or reflect, their own unique organization.
So Hess had a list of competencies which were unrelated to their independent spirit and indeed looked like every other energy company wish list. We were asked to design a radical behavioural model against which we could measure, assess, develop and manage staff at all levels, but using ‘the voice of the line’ to define these parameters, ie let the behaviours ‘bubble up’ rather than be imposed.
The resulting ‘Hess Habits’ became synonymous with the Hess brand, being rolled out across the whole global business, using the Hess Habits 360, Hess Habits Appraisal Process, Hess Habits Development Process and the Hess Habits Program, all feeding into the Hess talent management process allowing the senior team to assess, measure, analyze, manage and make informed decisions about the future. The Hess Habits were also circulated externally to exhibit the Hess way and also to use external sources to feed into the analysis and development of the people and the business.
